Is The Teaching Profession for me?


    I have concluded that teaching children is a great privilege. Spending every day with children can definitely be challenging and at some points exhausting, but I don’t think there’s anywhere else I would rather be. Children have such great energy and curiosity; it's invigorating to watch them grow and understand the world around them. What’s even more incredible is that a teacher may spend the day teaching, but a teacher can learn quite a bit from their students.  So, in short, I’d say the teaching profession is for me.  

    My service-learning experience has definitely helped me make up my mind about teaching. The teachers I volunteered for were amazing and very helpful. I learned a great deal while in their classrooms. Also, I was lucky enough to have many amazing teachers when I was young. They made coming to school fun and learning exciting. I want to be that kind of teacher to someone. 

    I’m very happy and excited to say that I see a future in teaching. My next steps are to finish my prerequisites to apply for the Elementary Education program at Utah Valley University.  I’m hoping I will be able to start the program the spring semester of 2024.

Blog Entry #1

 The School & The Students  The elementary school I will be volunteering at looks a little old, but also very welcoming. The office staff were very friendly and full of information. I didn't speak with any parents but I did see quite a few parents walking their students to where they line up for school.  The neighborhood surrounding the school is very nice. As of right now I don't know a whole lot about the students I'm going to be working with because  I haven't started yet. I do know that I will be working with second graders, fifth graders and maybe some other grades as well.   Service learning is learning by doing or through experience. By volunteering at an elementary school, I will be able to learn through observing and helping a teacher in the classroom.   This type of learning will help me to truly understand and develop the skills needed to be a teacher.
