  • Are you making connections between course topics and Service Learning?   

I have made connections between course topics and my service learning. An example of this is the connection I made in blog entry number four. There are many practices in place in my learning placement that are in place because of historical events and laws. Some examples are help for children with disabilities and privacy policies.

I believe I have been able to articulate my own learning and understanding. Some examples of this are when I addressed the topic of standards in my last entry.  

I think blogging has been helpful throughout this process. It was interesting looking back at past entries and seeing how. much i have learned and how I have progressed.  


I see growth in multiple places, one being my understanding of the core standards and how they affect teaching. My service learning helped my understanding of different teaching styles and how a classroom is run.

Blog Entry #9

Is The Teaching Profession for me?      I have concluded that teaching children is a great privilege. Spending every day with children can definitely be challenging and at some points exhausting , but I don’t think th ere’s anywhere else I would rather be . Children have such great energy and curiosity; it's invigorating to watch them grow and understand the world around them. What’s even more incredible is that a teacher  may spend the day teaching ,  but a teacher can learn quite a bit from their students.   So, in short, I’d say the teaching profession is for me.        My service-learning experience has definitely helped me make up my mind about teaching. Blog Entry #1

 The School & The Students  The elementary school I will be volunteering at looks a little old, but also very welcoming. The office staff were very friendly and full of information. I didn't speak with any parents but I did see quite a few parents walking their students to where they line up for school.  The neighborhood surrounding the school is very nice. As of right now I don't know a whole lot about the students I'm going to be working with because  I haven't started yet. I do know that I will be working with second graders, fifth graders and maybe some other grades as well.   Service learning is learning by doing or through experience. By volunteering at an elementary school, I will be able to learn through observing and helping a teacher in the classroom.   This type of learning will help me to truly understand and develop the skills needed to be a teacher.
